John, I've gone through your edits for Chapter 2 of my dissertation and
I must say yet again how impressed I am - it was exactly what I wanted. I don't
think I have been more closely edited in my entire life, which, as it happens,
spans a 30-year professional career, much of it doing technical writing for
major hi-tech corporations (clearly not a recommendation for my own editing
skills...). I am particularly impressed with your masterfully subtle grasp of
prepositional use and word choice. I think I finally have got it that 'upon'
must be a spatial referent and 'on' is the general one - or something like
that? I cannot believe how quickly you were able to go through and mark so many
changes. I particularly appreciate that you focused on the mechanics as I had
requested and wisely pointed out more major issues for me to consider on my
own. Your edits vastly improved the precision of my language use without
interfering with my meaning or voice whatsoever. If this sounds like a plug for
you - it is. Feel free to use me as a reference anytime you need. By the way -
I picked your web site because your pricing formula worked exactly as I thought
such a thing should work. In work like this, it is best to offer a sample edit
and charge based upon time invested. There is no way to quote a hard-and-fast
price because the quality of the original work and the conceptual level
expected of the edited tremendously influence the editor's effort, but
sliding-scale fees can reasonably be defined. (The price break for student work
was important too, I'll admit.) Articulating such a self-evident professional,
but perhaps unpleasant truth to many greatly increased my confidence in your
likely professionalism and integrity. In fact, based on our experience this
last week or so, I have very much appreciated your professionalism - it has
